FOTF - top tips from a judge's perspective

I've been dabbling in Fashions on the Field (FOTF) for years and became a little more serious about it in 2018 when, you guessed it, I finally tasted success - my first sash.

For me, spring racing is an exciting time. It signals that the weather is getting warmer and there’s a sense of fun in the air. It also presents the chance to dress up – really dress up – and let’s face it, there are so few opportunities to do that anymore.

Recently I attended the Avoca Cup (an annual trip for me) to be part of the FOTF judging panel and it was exciting to see what the stylish racegoers of 2024 brought to the stage. Without doubt this was a standout year.

Believe it or not, I find judging more stressful than competing, because it is very hard to choose just one winner. And after the competition it’s inevitable that a competitor will ask why they didn’t win. It's also completely subjective - what appeals to me may not appeal to others on the panel. Neither of us are wrong... so who wins?

Most judges have also been competitors, so they know the sting of not winning, especially when so much time and effort goes into each look. Believe me we have all been there! In the lead up to the event I put a few of these notes down, attempting to answer a few questions about FOTF.

Namely, what exactly are the judges looking for, and how can you stand out? Here are some insights into the judging process and tips that have helped me walk away with a sash!

1. Attention to the Dress Code

Fashions on the Field is synonymous with elegance. The judges will be looking for outfits that are stylish and tasteful. This means avoiding outfits that are too casual or overly revealing, but it does not mean boring. Judges love originality, creativity and personality, so use the opportunity to have some fun.

Is there a theme? This is essential to know because if there is, the judges will be looking for an outfit that embraces the theme and a more classic outfit, no matter how gorgeous, will be ignored.

2. Cohesive Styling

Judges love a well-put-together look, where all elements of the outfit complement each other. This means the clothes and all the accessories—hats or fascinators, shoes, handbags, pocket squares and even gloves. The colour palette should be harmonious and each piece should work together to create a complete, polished look.

If you are entering as a couple, then there needs to be cohesion across the two outfits, demonstrating you are a matching pair.

3. Millinery Matters

A standout millinery piece can make or break your look. Hats or fascinators are a must and judges expect contestants to wear them.

Whether you choose something classic like a wide brimmed boater, or contemporary such as a crown or headband, ensure it complements your outfit and your hairstyle.

4. Attention to Detail

Judges will notice the small things, especially when it comes time to choose who will be sashed! Clean shoes, well-styled hair, and the use of accessories will set you apart. Every little detail adds to the overall presentation, so make sure your outfit is polished from head to toe.

5. Stage Presence and Presentation

Your outfit may be incredible, but confidence makes the biggest statement. Judges look for contestants who show they love what they are wearing and are clearly comfortable with their choice. When you step onto the stage, own your look.

Use your time on stage well. Judges want to assess the whole outfit so walk slowly, making sure to stop, pose and turn to show off all angles.

If the MC comes to talk to you (which often happens to give judges more decision-making time) talk about your outfit and draw attention to something interesting or unique about it. It can be that little piece of information that puts you to the top.

6. Acknowledge the Judges

The crowd can really get behind contestants, helping to bring out your confidence, but it can also be distracting. Remember you’re there to impress so while on stage, make sure you’ve stopped and looked at judges, ensuring they’ve seen all the elements of your outfit. A smile and eye contact in their direction is essential.

7. Weather and Season Appropriateness

No matter the season, this is Victoria and Mother Nature can throw just about any kind of weather at us, so make sure you have chosen something that suits the day. If it’s going to be colder than expected, adjust your outfit with an extra layer such as light jacket, shoulder wrap or sleeves. On a windy day, make sure your millinery is secure.

While no one wants to rule out any colours, spring and summer are traditionally about lighter, brighter colours and fabrics. Autumn and winter are darker hues and heavier fabrics. This goes for your millinery as well. The judges will notice outfits that reflect the season.

Final Thoughts

Fashions on the Field is all about fun. Congratulate yourself for firstly getting on stage, as not everyone can do this. And while you’re up there, make the most of your moment. Be proud of the outfit you’ve put together. No matter what happens, you loved the outfit when you arrived so what the judges decide shouldn’t make you think any less of it.

The truth is it will come down to the smallest detail. The judges will love more than one outfit yet there can only be one winner. Make sure you have thought about every element and given yourself the best chance.

And walk with confidence. Judges want to see an overall package—one that combines fashion, poise and individuality.

Good luck and may your outfit dazzle both the crowd and the judges! Can’t wait to see you out there.
